The Callus Revolution & Obama's Tax Plan

Back in 1959 the Cubans blindly chose change. At the beginning of the communist takeover, the government began targeting various groups of people whose primary transgression was the possession of wealth, later on the reasons varied, but the systematic dismantling of Cuba’s society unbeknownst to many Cubans, had just began. The targeted individuals would either end up with their properties confiscated and their reputations ruined at best, or thrown in jail or executed at worst. The vast majority of the citizenry out of fear, apathy or envy, would watch these injustices in silence and allow the rights of the “escape goats du jour” to be violated with impunity. It wasn’t until they themselves became targeted, that they would experience an epiphany about the regime’s brutal nature.

One of the idiosyncrasies of the Cuban culture is to use humor when faced with serious situations, while at the same time not detracting from the message it conveys. Our cultural propensity for humor, gave way to a new name for the revolution which made its way into the Cuban vernacular (La Revolucion del Callo), Castro’s revolution became known as The Callus Revolution, this name helped describe the phenomenon that allowed previously loyal followers of the regime to become enlighten dissidents overnight, once they too were affected by the repression, in other words once their callus had been stepped on.

Why is this pertinent you may ask? It is pertinent because of the déjà vu effect that I feel when I hear Obama peddle his class warfare rhetoric, and talk about a tax plan that will supposedly target earners of $250,000 a year or more. The lack of outrage from the populace, the eerie passiveness with which a large segment of our population hears this proposal with approval, apathy or satisfaction, reminds me of times past and so I ask. By what right should the government take it upon itself to punish the most productive segments of society? Who gives any politician the right to determine who is rich, or who has too much money? What regards are being given to the efforts that yielded to such wealth? Today the amount is $250,000; tomorrow it will be $200,000; the day after $100,000; and already there is talk about our 401K accounts, a lot sooner than later, our entire society will have a sore callus of their own.

It is precisely during times of turmoil and discontent that free societies need to be the most vigilant, for it is then that they are most susceptible to the siren’s songs of a charlatans. With so many politicians attacking our capitalist society today, and falsely attributing the current economic crises to the failure of the free market, Americans need to reflect on what was it that made us the greatest nation on Earth, and what exactly is the type of change we want, the wise words of my grandmother come to mind, when she use to warn me at times, “Be Careful Not To Throw Out The Baby With The Bath Water” she said, let’s hope that on November 4th, Americans heed her words as well.

Change is a double edge sword

The “dreaded” George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. During the first six years the economy was humming along after rebounding from the six to eight months “real recession” it was engulfed in since the third quarter of the year 2000.

During the time of the 2006 elections, consumer confidence stood at a 3 year high, the average cost of a gallon of gasoline was $2.19, the unemployment rate was at 4.5% the DOW JONES had hit a record high 14,000 + points and Americans were buying new cars, taking cruises, and traveling overseas, by all accounts the economy was doing just fine.

But Americans were told that they wanted 'CHANGE'! They were convinced by the Democrats and the mainstream media that the Iraq war was lost, that our efforts there were futile and that the only option left for us, was to cut and run, to surrender. We were promised that the election of Democrats would lead to the immediate ending of the war, as well as the culture of corruption that permeated Washington under the Republican's watch. Therefore after years of this constant barrage of negativity, Americans were persuade on 2006 to vote for a Democratic Congress. They voted for change!!!

And changes we got- on all aspects except the reason for which they were elected. The war was not ended and to the Democrats dismay the war was not lost, nor the culture of corruption that they spoke about, which instead of having ended, seems to have reached new heights.

Here is the change we got:

1) Consumer confidence has plummeted. For the last 8 years the Democrats have been talking down the economy and warning us about the impending recession just around the corner. Something they openly concluded will help them gain power, therefore they continue to sell gloom and doom, with total disregard of the repercussion to the average American family.

2) Gasoline rose to over $4 a gallon, yet the Democratic congress refuses to allow exploration of oil within our own territory, blocking every attempt to allow America to become energy independent. They have done this while ignoring the desires of an overwhelming majority of Americans who wish us to explore within our own territory.

3) Unemployment has risen above 6% and continues to rise. Yet the Democrats are proposing tax increases to the same businesses that have always been the largest source of job creation in our free society, and they do this at a time when these businesses are more strapped for cash than ever before.

4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by over $12 TRILLION DOLLARS and it is still dropping! This is the result of a credit crunch caused by a financial meltdown created by the Democrat’s social engineering law called (The Community Reinvestment Act) which as part of its overall package, forces financial institutions to carry bad loans, in the name of the all encompassing “greater good”.

5) Over 1% of American homes are in foreclosure today, something that the Democrats blame on Wall Street. Yet anyone familiar with the free market understands that “incentive drives behavior”. When the government told those who sell mortgages that it would guarantee all the bad loans they made, as long as they were dubbed by the politically correct name of “Minority Loans”, the government in effect incented sales people to push bad loans on to those who could not afford them. Unethical as this may be, and condemned as it should be, it was this initiative from the Democrats with their Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac piñata that created the proper environment to make this debacle possible. In other words, Wall Street’s wrong doing was aided and abided by a politically created environment that allowed unfettered greed to be rewarded, an environment that was aggressively guarded and protected from any oversight; by the same Democrats in congress that we are now told will be correcting the problem.

6) The “Change” voted on 2006 has largely contributed to bringing our economy to the brink of collapse, the DOW has plummeted, billions of dollars have evaporated from stocks, bonds, mutual funds and investment portfolios, consumer confidence is extremely low and the Democrats continue to talk about gloom and doom, a self-fulfilling prophecy no doubt, if the American people entrust them with additional power on the coming election.

Change is a double-edged sword. If America wants true change in 2008, they need to use the other edge of the sword to rid our government of all these merchants of doom responsible for the financial crisis.

Are we in peril?

The development of groups like the ones that exist in Cuba and Venezuela, as well as in Germany long ago, have always been at the forefront of most repressive regimes. In spite of their politically correct names, these groups are usually at the forefront of intimidating any type of opposition to the government they represent.

That is the case in their initial phase, but once in power they are emboldened by the backing of the ominous government behind them, intimidation quickly morphs into repression and since these groups are “civilians” their excesses are not directly attributed to the government, who happily hides behind them, knowing that their status gives them plausible deniability, as they govern with their “thugs”.

I am often look at as though I am from Mars, when I tell friends that our freedoms may be in danger if the left is able to succeed, they view me as an alarmist, telling me that American's freedoms are guaranteed by our constitution, that our institutions are strong, and that what happens in other places throughout the world could never happen here.

While I understand that sentiment, since all living American generations today have only known liberty and prosperity throughout their entire lives, it is not uncommon to have this false sense of security about the rights and environment that we have grown in and enjoyed.

However what if:

1-   Politicians are able to put in place judges that will impose their will upon the people with total disregard for the constitution, and by so doing become willing accomplices of the politicians, thus shielding them of the repercussions associated with the responsibility of these laws created from the bench.

2-   Our nation is left vulnerable, due to the unrealistic assessments of the dangers that we face.

3-   Our sacred right to select our politicians is made a mockery of, due to the manipulation of elections by “Community Organizers” much like we are already seeing today.

4-   Our borders are allowed to be violated openly.

5-   The people’s money is mishandled and our financial institutions raped and force to carry bad loans, as they were forced to do through social engineering, with laws like the Community Reinvestment Act.

6-   Opposition leaders, CEOs and conservative voices are subjected to Kangaroo court investigations, accusations and condemnations, dragging them to testify and defend themselves in front of Senate hearings and or compromised judges, only to be defamed, destroyed and bankrupt, with the left’s version of the Salem trials.

7-    Our second amendment’s right as well as others are revoked, as the result of appointments to the bench, (it took a 5 to 4 decision a couple of months ago to turn back the Washington D.C. gun ban).

8-   Private ownership of “improperly used” properties is challenged for the “better good”, and class envy continues to be cultivated by a group of gloom and doom peddlers in control of all branches of government, legislative, executive, judicial, and let’s not forget the media.

Can we really be certain that we are not in peril?
